The Old Pecan Factory

Store at Christmas

Hugh Sparks, Jr. began buying and selling pecans in Eufaula, AL during the 1930's.  He bought the building that is now home to Superior Pecans in the mid to late 30's.  This building was originally built in the 1800's and served as a blacksmith shop. Prior to Mr. Sparks' purchase the building was a machine shop. For the first couple of years, he bought pecans from locals, sorted them by type and size, and resold them to people north of the Mason Dixon Line. In time, Mr. Sparks began processing his own pecans.

In the early 1960's, as a result of the construction of the Walter F. George Dam on the Chattahoochee River, there were several homes on Barbour Creek that would be flooded. Mr. Sparks was able to obtain lumber from some of these homes to add rooms for the cleaning, cracking, shelling and packaging processes. He also added office space and a roasting room to Superior Pecans. When finished, The Old Pecan Factory encompassed over 6,000 sq. feet.

This is how The Old Pecan Factory came to be.

As the pecan industry began to grow, Mr. Sparks saw a need for a unique product to ensure future business.  He began packaging the finest mammoth pecan halves in clear plastic tins for sale as corporate and personal gifts.  These pecans were not simply poured into containers but hand stacked by employees, creating an impressive pecan gift unique to Superior Pecans!
